Weekend Communique Week 3 - May 15-19, 2016
Dear Parents,
Students need to demonstrate a healthy attitude to learning for life, on a daily basis, through the way they conduct themselves, their willingness to learn from each other, their contribution to holistic learning opportunities at school and their rapport with peers and adults. We, at school, cannot leave a long lasting impact without the continued support of parents and care givers at home to assist us in grooming independent and responsible learners who continue to exemplify good attitude.

The Science Quiz, the Science-themed assembly, the in-class fun activities, the supremely successful CASE methodology Masterclass and the Science exhibition planned by the Science Faculty and executed by students whose love for the subject evidently extends beyond the classroom, made the Science Week an experience in all things enquiry, investigation and critical thinking based. Well done to the teachers, students and above all the parents who guided and motivated their wards! Heartfelt appreciation to parents who made the time to attend the Science Fair and the Masterclass!

This just goes to show how our students are indeed developing their skills for life at school.

It was sheer delight to watch inventiveness at it brim as the Genius Hour themes for Unit 1 culminated for the main part on Thursday, 12th of May. Catch images of student creations of both innovative designs and spaces uploaded on updates on the school Facebook webpage.
MAC@NMS
Honored to perhaps be the only school in the region to have a fully equipped MAC lab, GNMS engaged in training students of all grades (5 – 9) in the Middle School with a hands-on approach to using the fabulous apps on MAC systems guided by Mr Simon. In the coming weeks, students will explore how to create apps for a variety of purposes and will be showcasing their creations to the parent body on the 4th of June.
The third prize bagged by a fantastic group of IT-savvy girls from grade 5 to 9 who competed against top notch schools in the region in the CISCO Power Girls Rock star Challenge were successful at selling their app before even it was released. Many congratulations to the students and Ms Anita, their CISCO mentor!

Weekend Communique, April Week 4, April 24-28, 2016
Dear Parents,
“Never be afraid to make mistakes” echoed renowned poet and winner of eight literary awards, Terry Caffrey during his closing remarks at the author session held for students of grade 7, 8 and 9 on Wednesday, 27th April. Through his thoroughly captivating session, students and teachers alike learned how taking risks and developing a fearless spirit while pursuing one’s passions can in fact inspire a meaningful life journey. The smiles, laughter and sheer delight of the audience interspersed with animated musical renditions of his compositions did go a long way to kindle a deep understanding of how the skill of writing is born when we draw from our very own life contexts and attitudes. He stressed on the discovery and nurturing of unique talents at a very early age which indeed is at the core of our ethos at GNMS. Kindly read on for glimpses of the week gone by:
Learning@NMS
The second signature event of the academic year, namely the Prize Night scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 4th of May will bear witness to the school community coming together to applaud and felicitate the accomplishments of our students for the academic year 2015-16.
Kindly note that all students will disperse from school at 11:30am on 4th May 2016. Awardees, participants of performances for the night and Middle School student council leaders have been intimated via a circular that those using school transport will be picked at 4.30pm. All participants are expected to reach school latest by 5:00pm. Please feel free to contact your ward’s bus driver for further details.
Meanwhile, in the coming week, all students in the Middle School will attempt their first diagnostic standardized assessment for the current academic year, namely CAT4 which focusses on verbal, non-verbal and quantitative reasoning as well as gauging their spatial ability. The CAT 4 reports will serve as immensely valuable feedforward to parent, teacher and student on areas on strength and improvement. We wish students the very best of luck for the assessments! Parents, please note that CAT 4 assessments require no prior preparation.
ICT High Tea Master class@NMS
The Masterclass held on Wednesday, 27th of April for all parents of both the Primary and Middle School as teachers and students did well to guide attendees on how school-subscribed ICT software tools, IXL and GIZMOS develops independent learning and raise target skill attainment in Math and Science. Much appreciation goes out to parents who made the time to attend the session! Well done to our teacher facilitators (Ms Nahmiya and Ms Jobi) and the student facilitators who went the extra mile to make the session a success!
Big Write@NMS
In the upcoming week, English lessons will focus heavily on the Reading-Writing connect. Through the Big Write, we endeavor to develop book review writing skills among students in the Middle School. The Big Talk will revolve around books and short stories being closely read.
Towards this, setting apart reading time at home is indispensable if students are to be groomed into life-long independent learners. We request the continued support of parents to engage in discussions with their ward at home on books and stories being read on a regular basis.
Labor Day@NMS
Labor Day commemorated on the 1st of May world over inspires the Community Outreach initiative for the month. We request parents to contribute dry foods in sealed packets which will be collected by student representatives, segregated, packed and donated to labor camps in the city. Weekend Communique, April Week 3, April 17-21, 2016
Dear Parents,
It has been a week of celebrating learning in lessons and one wherein we witnessed the school’s first premier event of the academic year, namely the Investiture Ceremony. Read on for glimpses of the week gone by:
Investiture Ceremony@NMS
In a scintillating ceremony attended by eminent Guests of Honor comprising, Dr Anand Menon, CEO and Success Sculptor of Compass Training, Mr Darryl Bloud, Vice President - GEMS Education, Ms Sarah de Clercq, Programs Manager, Clean Energy Business Council and Ms Silviya Haggenmarker, Business Development Manager, Academy Plus, forty six members of the Student Council (2016-17) took their oath to office. The presence of the ever supportive parent community, the school choir’s spectacular rendition of the song ‘Burn’, the inspirational speeches both by the Principal and Dr Menon and finally the informal gathering after the event wherein the Head Boy, Samarth Khanduri and Head Girl, Brigette Coelho cut the ceremonial cake amidst loud cheers were what made the event endearing and a truly memorable one. The Student Council now embark on the task of executing their duties and leaving an impact during their tenure in their respective roles.
Learning@NMS
Student written records have this year been in greater focus for both teachers and students alike. Raising standards in expectations for notebook work is something all teachers have shared with their pupils. We urge the support of parents in our endeavor to ensure students are increasingly conscious and committed to the quality and presentation of written work in their notebooks.
As part of encouraging a culture of reflection on teacher feedback, students will use purple pens to comment on their understanding of how they can improve their work.

Weekend Communique, April Week 2, April 10-14, 2016
Dear Parents,
The week gone past has exemplified how school is indeed a preparation for skills required in real life. The well-planned and executed election process for the Student Council 2016-17 gave all students an opportunity to nominate themselves to a post or as a member to a sub-council. The candidate speeches both at the assembly and during registration time offered aspirants an opportunity to reflect upon their role and the difference they would make during their tenure. An equal onus and excitement was generated amongst student voters who had the greater responsibility to vote a right candidate to the post.
Student Leadership@NMS
Forty six office bearers will take formal oath to ten student council positions amidst an august gathering comprising of our Guests of Honor, parents, special invitees and the student body from grade 4 to 9. The Investiture Ceremony scheduled to take place on Thursday, 21st April from 8 to 9am will be Red Letter Day for the office bearers who during their tenure will contribute to school life and will be involved in the decision making process. Many congratulations to the elected student leaders! We look forward to each of you making a visible impact in your respective roles.
Learning@NMS
Kindly find below the continuous assessment structure for unit 1 for grades 5 to 8. We ensure that the assessment structure for each unit and the format of the End of Unit assessment is in line with CBSE guidelines and Sheikh Maktoum’s educational vision for the UAE. Portions for the Mid-Unit check and the EoUs will be shared via a portion sheet and formal communication from school.
The Bridge Program on Sundays and Thursdays for students who need additional support to come up to speed with curriculum expectations is a wonderful opportunity offered at NMS. We urge all parents to avail of it and refrain from sending their ward to any external booster lessons. We would like to reiterate that consistent academic accomplishment throughout the year in every unit is what we would like our students to work towards.
The grade 9 Formative Assessment structure for Term 1 will be shared with students by the NMS CBSE Coordinator, Mr Peri Sarma on the upcoming week.
Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubharak Award for Excellence (2015-16)
Dharitri Kapoor of 8B was among an elite group of thirty seven students from GEMS schools in the region to receive the very prestigious Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubharak Award for Excellence at a grand ceremony held at GEMS Modern Academy on 11th April. The presence of Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan at the ceremony to honor the girls lent to the occasion a grandeur rarely come across. His patronage to the institution of the award demonstrated the commitment of UAE leaders to the education of girls and their accomplishments.
Dharitri won the award in recognition for outstanding academic performance, commitment to the environment and global citizenship. The NMS family is very proud of you, Dharitri!

Weekend Communique, April Week 1, April 3-7, 2016
Dear Parents,
It is an honor to welcome via my first weekly email to you those whose wards have joined the NMS family this past week, those whose wards continue their progressive learning journey with us and also those whose wards have graduated from the Primary to Middle School. We are indeed at the threshold of a new beginning and the enthusiasm and eagerness has been palpable amongst our students.
This week’s assembly lead by the Principal, Vice Principal and myself celebrated student achievement in the form of published success stories that made their deserved way into the GEMS Family Magazine. It also outlined a renewed emphasis on the tireless striving towards accelerated attainment in the continuous assessment structure at school and inspired listeners through an anecdote on how in the race towards excellence, the sharpened mind will have to triumph when the body wanes.
Learning@NMS
Learning in lessons came alive with the sharing of meticulously designed curriculum targets in each subject and the use of innovative SOLO taxonomy strategies to gauge the baseline at the start of the academic year 2016-17. The orientation of students to the NMS Behavior Policy, personal grooming expectations, classroom routines, class leaders, the buddy system for new joiners, a guided tour of pioneering new facilities at school and the class treaty have paved the way for a productive learning journey for each of our students. Meanwhile, a core team of debaters came together this week to have their first coaching session in the World School’s Debating format. Ten of the seventeen will represent NMS at the premier Gulf Debates on 15th April. Public Speaking enthusiasts can look forward to the World Scholar’s Cup regional round flyer coming their way in the next week.
Student Leadership@NMS
The closing date for submissions on Thursday, 7th April of Student Council applications set the pace as new NMS Student Council positions were revealed and each aspirational applicant reflected deeply on their responses in a well-worded form which will perhaps determine their shortlisting at the panel interviews scheduled for the coming week. The NMS Student Council 2016-17 will formally take oath at the Investiture Ceremony to be held at the end of this month.
Innovation@NMS
We urge parents to read through snapshots in the Weekly Communique of students engaged in designing their class treaties, their partaking in their first drama lesson, the t-MBA course for grade 9 students and the financial literacy module for grade 8 students in addition to the designing of spaces and 3D structures in the first Genius Hour in the Middle School this week. We can’t wait to see their awe-inspiring creations!
Community Outreach Programme@NMS
For the Community Outreach Programme, April 2016, a collection drive has been organized for old uniforms, school bags and textbooks. All mentioned items must be handed over in polybags with a label stating the item which needless to say must be in a clean, neat and reusable condition. Request the support of parents towards this worthy cause. All collections will be made to homeroom teachers through the coming week (10th to 13th April).
Finally, as independent learners in the Middle School, we request parental support towards inculcating in their wards an attitude that ‘learning is predominantly the function of the learner’. We hope that this attitude coupled with a consciousness for the betterment of the community propels them onwards in life.
Wish you all a great weekend and fabulous week ahead!
