Weekend Communique, May Week 3, May 15-19, 2016
Dear Parents,
Some of the important life skills we wish to hone in each student at school is the ability to develop independence, confidence, social skills and ability to observe and learn from their immediate environment.
Students in the Primary School are excited to not only embark on their journey of exploring and learning through the field trip scheduled on 22nd and 23rd May, but are also preparing to showcase their learning as a part of the science week in the upcoming exhibition. Details of the same will be shared with you shortly.
Field Trips@NMS
The excitement unfolds on the 22nd and 23rd of May when students from Grade 1 to 4 will visit Heritage Village, Sparky’s/ Kidzania as a part of their extended learning. Students who are participating in the field trip(s) are requested not to bring their books on the day of the trip. They are to come dressed neatly in regular school uniform and ID card. They may carry a little snack and water bottle and a notepad to record their observation. Students who will not be going for the trip need to carry their books and bag as per regular school day.
Learning@NMS
The Science Week has been a truly interesting line up of activities to continue to keep the scientific buzz and investigative fizz invigorating learning in Science. The science assembly, quiz and exhibition were a delight to see. Students will be awarded with certificates for the best exhibits and winning the science quiz in the coming weeks.
The Masterclass for parents of Primary and Middle School parents was a huge success as parents learnt more about the CASE methodology used at school to foster enquiry, investigation and critical thinking in the subject.
Meanwhile, the Primary Regional round of World Scholar’s Cup to be hosted at NMS on the 26th of May invites students between the ages 8 to 11 to enroll for the competition which over the years has proven to build public speaking, quizzing and collaboration skills amongst its participants. Do not miss enrolling your child for it! Feel free to contact [email protected] for more details.
Innovation@NMS
It was sheer delight to watch inventiveness at it brim as the Genius Hour themes for Unit 1 culminated. Catch images of student creations of both innovative designs and spaces uploaded on updates on the school Facebook webpage.
MAC@NMS
Honored to perhaps be the only school in the region to have a fully equipped MAC lab, GNMS engaged in training students of grades 4 in the Primary School with a hands-on approach to using the fabulous apps on MAC systems. In the coming weeks, students will explore how to create apps for a variety of purposes and will be showcasing their creations to the parent body on the 4th of June.
Attendance and Punctuality @NMS
For any reason if your ward has to report late or leave early from school the following points need to be kept in mind.
We recommend that students attend school regularly in order to be at par with the learning. Absence from classes reflects on the academics and well as social development.
Labor Day@NMS
The Dry Food collection drive continues till the end of the month. About 270 kgs of donations have been distributed at an Al Quoz Labour Camp today by a group of selfless students and their ever supportive parents. The next batch of donations will be made to the housekeeping and support staff including the drivers at our school.
Sport@NMS
Three students (Jeff Timon – 4C, Anirudh Krishnamoorthy – 4C, Iravan Partha – 4B) represented the Primary School at the GEMS Global Swimming Competition on the 10th and 12th of May. The NMS family is proud of their efforts and wish them to continue aiming high. All swimming enthusiasts have a competitive treat in store with the upcoming 1st GNMS Swimming Gala to be held this month beginning 22nd May.
Wish you all a great weekend and a fabulous week ahead!

Weekend Communique, April Week 4, April 24-28, 2016
Dear Parents,
It has been a week of celebrating learning in lessons and one wherein we witnessed the school’s first premier event of the academic year on last Thursday 21-4-16, namely the Investiture Ceremony. Read on for glimpses of the week gone by:
Investiture Ceremony@NMS
In a scintillating ceremony attended by eminent Guests of Honor comprising, Dr Anand Menon, CEO and Success Sculptor of Compass Training, Mr Darryl Bloud, Vice President - GEMS Education, Ms Sarah de Clercq, Programs Manager, Clean Energy Business Council and Ms Silviya Haggenmarker, Business Development Manager, Academy Plus, forty six members of the Student Council (2016-17) took their oath to office. The presence of the ever supportive parent community, the school choir’s spectacular rendition of the song ‘Burn’, the inspirational speeches both by the Principal and Dr Menon and finally the informal gathering after the event wherein the Head Boy, Samarth Khanduri and Head Girl, Brigette Coelho cut the ceremonial cake amidst loud cheers were what made the event endearing and a truly memorable one. The Student Council now embark on the task of executing their duties and leaving an impact during their tenure in their respective roles.
ICT High Tea Master class@NMS
The Masterclass held on Wednesday, 27th of April for all parents of both the Primary and Middle School guided you through how school-subscribed ICT software tools, IXL and GIZMOS can develop independent learning and raise target skill attainment in Math and Science. We appreciate all the parents who took time out to attend the session and be a part of the learning journey.
Learning@NMS
Student written records have this year been in greater focus for both teachers and students alike. Raising standards in expectations for notebook work is something all teachers have shared with their pupils. We urge the support of parents in our endeavor to ensure students are increasingly conscious and committed to the quality and presentation of written work in their notebooks.
As part of encouraging a culture of reflection on teacher feedback, students will use purple pens/pencils to comment on their understanding of how they can improve their work.
Reading@NMS
#Readingchangeslives is the driving motto for Sheikh Maktoum announcing 2016 as the UAE Year of Reading. This month, students in English lessons learnt about poetry recitation and delivered it in front of their classmates with proper articulation as a part of poetry recitation activity in class.. The Poetry Month encourages a deeper appreciation and understanding of poetry as well as enhances general literacy skills.
Author Visit @ NMS
Award winning Author Ms. Candy Gourlay who has won the prestigious Philippines’ National Children’s Book Award visited GNMS on Thursday, 28th April 2016. Students from Grades 3 & 4 got an opportunity to attend an interactive session with renowned poet and the award winning author, Ms. Candy Gourlay who spoke to the students on the writer’s craft and art of storytelling and narrated stories to them.
Students also got an opportunity to interact with the author and purchase the book signed by the Author herself.
Green Day@NMS
To commemorate International Mother Earth Day which was observed on the 22nd of April, students and teachers came attired in green on Monday, 25th April. In addition, students enjoyed green, healthy snacks for lunch during tiffin time.
Community Outreach@NMS
The collection drive organized for old uniforms, school bags and textbooks culminated this week. All contributions are being formally logged in student Registration Booklet reflection pages under the title ‘Sewa’. Each Sewa act/contribution will be countersigned by the Homeroom Teacher and COEP coordinator, Ms Jobi along with Ms. Mellisa who is in charge of Primary sections.

Weekend Communique, April Week 1, April 3-7, 2016
Dear Parents,
Heartiest congratulations for your child’s promotion to the next grade and a big Welcome to the new admissions.
Equally challenging and exciting, this year a range of new activities and subjects will be offered to your ward, such as ELL and drama. The new phase with state of the art Library, Music and Art rooms, Black box, Auditorium, etc. brings with it many more opportunities for children to explore their abilities and polish their skills.
The academic year began with the parent orientation that was held on 30th March, 2016. Thank you to the parents for making it. You may refer to the parent handbook and the orientation presentation that has been sent to you for unit plans, schedules, routines, contacts, etc.
Registration Journal- Every morning during homeroom period, students target completing an activity independently in the registration booklet. It involves a set of worksheets regarding classroom rules, aptitude skills, basic mental math, science facts, world and animals, etc. the purpose of this Journal is to develop self-learning skills along with age appropriate learning.
Reading corner-This year, every classroom has been designed with a “Reading corner”. Students can enjoy a book of their choice during independent learning time, or even during lessons. The purpose of this area in the classroom is to create an ambience which promotes the love for books. Parents are welcome to pre-schedule with teachers and visit to read out a book to the students, which will further enhance the importance of the Reading corner.
Trolley bags- Please ensure that your child doesn’t bring a trolley bag to school, since it is a discipline, health and safety issue. We need your cooperation in ensuring that students understand the importance of following rules and taking ownership of their own safety.
Table etiquette- During break time, students are expected to follow good dining etiquette by laying out their napkins on their tables, and cleaning their hands and face with a hand sanitizer once they finish their meal. Please note that students must use a spoon to eat. It is mandatory for you to send a towel, a napkin and a hand sanitizer every day with your child. Do label the belonging with your child’s name Grade and section to ensure it doesn’t get misplaced.
Books- All through the week, notebooks will be sent as per the homework schedule. This is being done so that the bags do not get too heavy for the students to carry. Students will keep their books in their personal lockers. However, on Thursdays and 3 days before the End of Unit tests, all books will be sent home for students to revise their topics.
Homework- Teachers will begin uploading homework and practice worksheets from next week onwards on My Learning. Kindly keep checking the resource bank for extra practice material.
Please ensure that you send an amount of Aed 50/- in a sealed envelope with your ward’s name, grade and section clearly mentioned on it to the homeroom teacher by Sunday 10-4-16.
This collection is against the following:
The Parent Handbook was handed over to the parents on the day of the orientation. The other items will be handed over to your ward in class.
